Asymmetric line broadening in intracavity loss modulated quantum well distributed feedback lasers

چکیده
We report for the first time high-speed (Gbit s ‘), single mode, digital (on-off) modulation of intracavity loss modulated 1.55 pm InGaAs/InP multiple quantum well distributed feedback lasers. The lasing spectrum, observed to be asymmetrically broadened under high-speed modulation, is shown to result from large carrier density variations which accompany this switching scheme. We also show, for the first time, digitally current-modulated lasers have broader linewidths than devices which use intracavity loss modulation.

Saturable absorption in intracavity loss modulated quantum well lasers
Voltage, temperature, and intensity dependence of saturable absorption in InGaAs/InP multiple quantum wells are investigated and related to the lasing characteristics of intracavity loss modulated InGaAs/InP quantum well lasers. Bistability in the static laser light output/absorber voltage characteristic arises from the shape of the measured absorption/ voltage/intensity surface of the quantum ...
متن کاملDynamic properties of quantum dot distributed feedback lasers: high speed, linewidth and chirp
The dynamic properties of distributed feedback lasers (DFBs) based on InAs/InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) are studied. The response function of QD DFBs under external modulation is measured, and the gain compression with photon density is identified to be the limiting factor of the modulation bandwidth. The enhancement of the gain compression by the gain saturation with the carrier density in QDs is...
متن کاملOptical ASK and FSK Modulation By Using Quantum Well Transistor Lasers
In this paper, transistor lasers (TLs) are used as an optical modulator for generation of ASK(Amplitude Shift Keying) and FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) optical signals. Our analysis is based on continuity equation, rate equations, and the theory of discontinuity of quasi-fermi level at the abrupt junction. Our simulation results indicate that, the specification of ASK and FSK optical signals, ar...

The primary objective in this program is the development of an extremely stable, low-jitter, single-frequency cw dye laser for use in a variety of applications such as optical communication and ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy, and for studying fundamental interactions between radiation and matter. During the past year we have been concerned with the short-term stabilization of commercially av...
متن کاملSpectral broadening in continuous-wave intracavity Raman lasers.
Spectral broadening of the fundamental field in intracavity Raman lasers is investigated. The mechanism for the spectral broadening is discussed and the effect is compared in two lasers using Raman crystals with different Raman linewidths. The impact of the spectral broadening on the effective Raman gain is analyzed, and the use of etalons to limit the fundamental spectral width is explored. It...
